So in recent news in my life, Maryland Senator, Ben Cardin, came to my school today to give a talk with a following Q and A session on torture. Even though the visit from Cardin was a great honor, I felt that it was a bit like preaching to the choir, because my school is very liberal and anti-torture.
Some points about torture and water-boarding I think are interesting:
- if the US allows torture, doesn't that mean we have to allow other countries to do the same to our soldiers?
- why isn't the US government solving the problem were it originating... In Iran, Afghanistan, and other Middle Eastern countries. If we took a stance there that was not just plain aggression, but rather acting a mediator, I think that many problems could be solved
- THE GENEVA CONVENTION-- In the latest Geneva Convention the US swore not to torture POW. Bush's way around this is saying that the prisoners in Guantanamo are illegal enemy combatants and therefore not subject to the rules put in place by the convention.
Speaking about conventions--
I am attending a Model UN convention soon. I am representing Paraguay on DISEC (Disarmament and International Security Committee). DISEC will, at this conference, be focusing on denuclearizing problematic countries such as Iran, and Pakistan.
Have a good night everyone!!
